HOGWARTS
First year: 1991.
House: Gryffindor.
Yule Ball date: Parvati Patil.
Earned 7 OWLs (9 attempted): Astronomy A; Care of Magical Creatures E; Charms E; Defense Against the Dark Arts O; Divination P; Herbology E; History of Magic D; Potions E; Transfiguration E. (HBP5). These grades qualified Harry for a career as an Auror.
Quidditch: Seeker for Gryffindor House team 1991 - 1997 (youngest player for a House team in a hundred years). Captain of the team during his sixth year (HBP6).
Awards, etc.: Quidditch Cup; Special Award for Services to the School (CS18); Triwizard Tournament Champion.
Other schools: Before he was admitted to Hogwarts, Harry was to attend Stonewall High, the local public school (PS3). Later, the Dursleys explain Harry's absence during the school year away by telling people that he attends St. Brutus's Secure Center for Incurably Criminal Boys, a "first-rate institution for hopeless cases." (PA2, GF1).
SKILLS, MAGICAL DEVICES, ETC.
Wand: Holly and phoenix feather, eleven inches, nice and supple; an unusual combination. It is the "brother" to Lord Voldemort’s wand (PS5), in that both contain a feather from Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes (GF36). This wand was broken during the escape from the Bathilda Bagshot's house, and Harry was wandless until Ron returned with a blackthorn wand he had captured from snatchers. The blackthorn wand was noticeably clumsy and less powerful. Luckily Harry was able to win Draco's, Bellatrix's and Womtail's wands during the escape from the Malfoy mansion. Of the three, Draco's (hawthorn and unicorn hair, 10 inches, reasonably springy), was the friendliest (DH24) so Harry used this one until he could fix his original holly wand (DH36).
Broomstick: Nimbus 2000 (1991-3), Firebolt (1994-97).
Other devices: Invisibility cloak, Marauder’s Map, Pocket Sneakoscope, two-way mirror (OP), two-way mirror shard (DH), Sword of Gryffindor, Resurrection Stone, Elder Wand (DH).
Socks: Socks with spiders on them (PS2) ; Dobby gave him red (with broomsticks) and green socks (with Snitches) for Christmas (GF23).
Organizations & affiliations: Gryffindor Quidditch Seeker and team captain; Dumbledore’s Army; Slug Club.
Career: While in school, Harry decided he wanted to be an Auror (OP), and his wish came true. After Voldemort was killed, new Minister of Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt asked Harry to become an Auror. Harry reformed the Auror Department and became its Head in 2007 (JKR).
Skills: A "natural" Quidditch player (PS); a Parselmouth until 1998 (CS, BLC); can cast spells without a wand; senses the presence of others; prescient dreams; particularly skilled in Defense against the Dark Arts; appears to be resistant to the Imperius Curse and Veelas. Had difficulty learning Occlumency, but finally figured it out in 1998.
Patronus: Stag, clearly referring to his father's Animagus form.
Worst fear/memory: Harry relives the death of his parents when dementors are close by.
Boggart: A dementor.
Amortentia (love potion) smells: "treacle tart, the woody smell of a broomstick handle, and something flowery he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow" (HBP9).
Criminal? Harry was named "Undesirable Number One" by the Death Eater-controlled Ministry. A ten-thousand-Galleon reward was set for his capture (DH16).
RONALD BILIUS 'RON' WEASLEY
FAMILY
Birthdate: 1 March 1980 (BBC 2001).
Ancestry: Pure-blood.
Mother: Molly (Prewett) Weasley.
Father: Arthur Weasley.
Maternal grandparents: Molly and Sirius are "cousins by marriage," (OP6) so Molly's parents are probably related in some way to the Prewetts listed on the Black Family Tree (see BFT and my notes).
Paternal grandparents: Septimus and Cedrella Weasley (see BFT and my notes).
Aunts & Uncles:
Weasley: Arthur had 2 brothers but we don't know their names (JKR). According to Jo, Ginny is the first female to be born into the Weasley family in generations, so we can deduce that Arthur had no sisters (JKR).
Prewett: Molly's brothers Gideon and Fabian Prewett (OP9).
Surname unknown:
Uncle Bilius, who saw a Grim and died a week later (PA6).
Great Auntie Muriel who has a goblin-made tiara (HBP29).
Cousins: Mafalda, a cousin who never made it into the books (JKR) and her father the Muggle accountant (PS6).
Siblings: Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, and Ginny.
Grandparents: Grandfather who originally owned Ron's "old and battered" wizard chess set (PS12). This grandfather could be either grandfather Prewett or grandfather Weasley (Septimus? BFT).
Location of childhood home: 'The Burrow,' near Ottery St. Catchpole, Devon.
Spouse: Hermione Granger. Given the ages of their children, the marriage took place at some point between 1998 and 2005 (DH/e).
Children: Rose (b. circa 2006) and Hugo (DH/e), and godfather to Harry's son James Sirius Potter (YL).
Pet: Initially Scabbers the rat (until 1994), then Pigwidgeon ('Pig'), a small gray owl (GF5).
RON at HOGWARTS
First year: 1991.
House: Gryffindor
Yule Ball date: Padma Patil.
Quidditch: Gryffindor Quidditch keeper (OP, HBP11).
Earned 7 OWLs: Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts , Herbology, Potions and Transfiguration. Unlike Harry, Ron received no Os (Outstanding). Failed Divination and History of Magic (HBP5).
Awards, etc.: Special Award for Services to the School (CS18); Prefect (OP).
SKILLS, ETC.
Wand: Initially used Charlie’s old wand. There is conflicting information about his second wand. According to PA4, it is 14-inch willow containing one unicorn tail-hair, but according to Jo's website it is Ash (JKR). Ron used this wand until it was taken by the Greyback and the snatchers (DH23). He never got that one back. Eventually he won Pettigrew's: Chestnut and Dragon Heartstring, 9.25 inches, Brittle (DH23). Ron also took a blackthorn wand from one of the first set of Snatchers and gave it to Harry (DH19, 23).
Broom: An old Shooting Star until late 1995 (CS3), then a Cleansweep 11 in 1995 as a reward for making Prefect (OP).
Devices: Wizard chess set, flying Ford Anglia, "heavy gold watch with odd symbols around the edge and tiny moving stars instead of hands," a gift from his parents (HBP18), Deluminator from Dumbledore (DH7), Sword of Gryffindor (DH36).
Career: Ron got his wish to be an Auror when he was recruited by Minister Shacklebolt to work with Harry to reform the Ministry and seek out the remaining Death Eaters (Today1, PC/JKR1). He also helped George run Weasley's Wizard Wheezes (BLC). The timing on this is uncertain; it is most probable that Ron assisted George later in life, rather than earlier, when his job as an Auror would have kept him extremely busy. --LWB, with thanks to Bandersnatch.
Organizations & affiliations: Dumbledore’s Army.
Skills: Chess, analysis and strategy. Tends to be wrong when he is serious, right when he is joking.
Hopes (Mirror of Erised): Ron sees himself as Head Boy, holding up the house cup and the Quidditch cup. He is Quidditch captain too (PS12).
Patronus: A Jack Russell terrier (TLC).
Boggart: A spider (PA7).
Handwriting: "untidy scrawl" (CS2).
Dates, flirtations, etc.: Ron attended the Yule Ball with Padma Patil in his fourth year (GF) and enjoyed a short, superficial relationship with Lavender Brown in his sixth year (HBP).
HERMIONE JEAN GRANGER
FAMILY
Birthdate: 19 Sept 1979 (AOL 2000, WBD 2004). Note: Although the DVD timelines were approved by Rowling, they do not match her other statements exactly. According to her website, Hermione was born before Harry and Ron, so her birthday would have to be in 1979, not 1980 as stated on the DVD.
Ancestry: Muggle-born.
Mother: Unnamed Muggle (dentist). Hermione thoughtfully protected her parents from Death Eater reprisals by modifying their memories, giving them new names (Wendell and Monica Wilkins), no memory that they once had a daughter, and then relocated them to Australia (DH6). When Voldemort and his forces were vanquished, she found them again and reversed her memory charm (BLC).
Father: Unnamed Muggle (dentist).
Siblings: At one time in the writing process, Hermione had a younger sister (WBD 2004); however, Rowling decided not to include that character, so Hermione is an only child (EBF 2004) (WBD 2004).
Childhood: The Grangers, while accepting the Wizarding world and their daughter's place in it, do not approve of using magic for quick fixes. They insisted, for example, that Hermione's somewhat oversized front teeth be dealt with in the usual way: with braces. They send healthy snacks by owl to Hermione at Hogwarts and come with her to Diagon Alley in August to help her buy her things for school. What they tell their family and friends about their daughter and her school is anyone's guess, but they are certainly proud of her.
Spouse: Ron Weasley (DH/e).
Children: Rose (born c. 2006) and Hugo (DH/e), and godmother to Harry's son James Sirius Potter (YL).
Pet: Crookshanks (cat/kneazle hybrid).
HERMIONE at HOGWARTS
First year: 1991.
House: Gryffindor, although the Sorting Hat considered putting her in Ravenclaw at first (OP19).
Earned 11 O.W.L.s: She received 10 "Outstandings" (Care of Magical Creatures, Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Herbology, Astronomy, History of Magic, Arithmancy, Ancient Runes and one unknown class), and an "Exceeds expectations" in Defence Against the Dark Arts (HBP5).
N.E.W.T.s: Hermione missed her seventh year at Hogwarts (DH), but she went back to school the whole following year and took her N.E.W.T.s so she could graduate properly (PC/JKR1).
Awards, etc.: Prefect for Gryffindor her 5th & 6th years.
Organizations & affiliations: Dumbledore’s Army; S.P.E.W.
Amortentia (love potion) smells: freshly mown grass, new parchment and Ron's hair (HBP9, BLC).
SKILLS, ETC.
Wand: Vine wood (JKR) with a dragon heartstring core (JKR) until it was taken by Greyback and his snatchers. After they escaped from the Malfoy mansion Hermione used Bellatrix's wand: walnut and dragon heartstring, 12.5 inches, unyielding (DH24).
Other devices: Revealer (CS13). Used a Time-Turner during the 1993-1994 school year to take extra classes (PA21), beaded purse (DH8).
Socks: Knits them for the house-elves.
Career: After Voldemort was killed, she worked for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures where she improved the quality of life for house-elves and other disenfranchised creatures. Later, she worked for Dept. of Magical Law Enforcement where she put an end to pro-pureblood laws (BLC).
Skills: Packing for long trips, Logic (PS16); Arithmancy; portable waterproof fires (CS); Apparition (HBP22). JKR says Hermione speaks for her sometimes (COS 2003). Has actually read Hogwarts: A History. Can produce a full Patronus and mastered the Protean Charm to create the enchanted coins used by Dumbledore's Army.
Patronus: Otter (OP27).
Boggart: McGonagall telling her she failed everything (PA16).
Handwriting: "neat" (CS2).

Location of childhood home: Mould-on-the-Wold until the attack on his sister, then Godric's Hollow.

Other Names: You-Know-Who, He Who Must Not Be Named, The Dark Lord

Died: May 2, 1998 (DH36, YL).
FAMILY
Ancestry: Half-blood (CS13); descendent of Salazar Slytherin (CS17).
Mother: Merope Gaunt (HBP10), who died in London one hour after giving birth (GF33 & HBP); she was a descendent of Salazar Slytherin (CS17).
Father: Tom Riddle, a Muggle from the village of Little Hangleton who abandoned Merope because he discovered she was a witch (CS13, CS17; GF33); described as anti-magic, rich, snobbish & rude (GF1).
Childhood: 1926-1938, Raised in a Muggle orphanage in London (CS13; GF33, HBP13). Orphanage was clean, but meager: a bare courtyard and grim, square building surrounded by high railings (HBP13). Head matron was Mrs. Cole. Mrs. Cole recalls that he was an odd baby -- he rarely cried, and as he got older he appeared to cause "nasty" things to happen to the other children and to pets around the orphanage. Also stole things: a yo-yo, a silver thimble, and a harmonica ('mouth organ').
Paternal grandfather: Mr. Riddle, also of Little Hangleton.
Maternal grandfather: Marvolo Gaunt, a descendent of Salazar Slytherin (HBP10).
Aunts, Uncles: His maternal uncle was Morfin Gaunt (HBP10).
Siblings: None.
Children: None (WBD2004).
Pet(?): Large snake named Nagini (GF1).
Obsession with his heritage leads to patricide: At Hogwarts, Tom was obsessed with his heritage. Although he knew since his first year that he was the Heir of Slytherin, he didn't learn the complete story until he tracked down and visited his uncle, Morfin Gaunt during the summer of 1943. Morfin told him that his father was a Muggle and his mother was a descendent of Slytherin. At this point, Tom Stunned Morfin and went to Riddle House where he murdered his father and grandparents. Before leaving Little Hangleton, Tom went back to the Gaunt shack and stole the gold Slytherin ring. It is unknown how, but Tom also bespelled Morfin into confessing to the crime. Morfin was convicted for the murders and sentenced to Azkaban (HBP17).
Boggart: "death, ignominious death .... He would see himself dead." (TLC)
Greatest desire: In front of the Mirror of Erised, Voldemort would see "Himself, all-powerful and eternal. That's what he wants." (TLC)
HOGWARTS
Years: 1938-1945; fees paid by Hogwarts assistance fund (HBP13).
House: Slytherin.
What did Tom know before his first year? Riddle did not know about his heritage, but he had discovered his powers: "I can make things move without touching them. I can make animals do what I want them to do, without training them. I can make bad things happen to people who annoy me. I can make them hurt if I want to." Tom had also discovered that he was a Parselmouth. After Dumbledore told him he was a wizard, Tom assumed that his mother was a Muggle and that he got his magic from his father (HBP13) (see also Voldemort timeline).
When did Tom find out he was the Heir of Slytherin? Tom-in-the-diary (Tom at the end of his 5th year) tells Harry "even I was surprised how well the plan worked. I thought someone must realize that Hagrid couldn't possibly be the Heir of Slytherin. It had taken me five whole years to find out everything I could about the Chamber of Secrets and discover the secret entrance" (CS17). Tom must have discovered he was the heir and that the Chamber existed very soon after his arrival for his first year at Hogwarts.
Artifacts: Diary created in 1943 at the beginning of his 6th year (CS, HBP). Dumbledore noticed that Tom liked to collect trophies: things he had taken from his victims, or stolen outright (HBP13), Slytherin ring, Slytherin locket, Hufflepuff cup (HBP20).
Awards, etc.: Prefect (1942); Medal for Magical Merit; gold shield-shaped award for "Special Services to Hogwarts" kept in the trophy room; Head Boy (1944).
Excelled in studies: According to Dumbledore, "He was one of the most brilliant students Hogwarts has ever seen" (CS18).
AFTER HOGWARTS
After leaving Hogwarts in 1945, Riddle began working at Borgin and Burkes on Knockturn Alley. His job was to ferret out items of value and obtain them at the lowest price possible. He suddenly left this job and disappeared after he killed Hepzibah Smith for a gold locket that belonged to Slytherin and a gold cup that belonged to Helga Hufflepuff (HBP20). Related page: Horcruxes.
WAND, POWERS, ETC.
Wand: yew wood, 13 ½" long, core consists of one of Fawkes’ (phoenix) feathers (PS5). Beginning in 1997, uses a series of wands in an attempt to circumvent Harry's wand:
Skills: Parselmouth (CS), Legilimens (OP24).
Boggart: Death, which he sees as something shameful (TLC).
Major magic:
Horcruxes to split his soul.
The "Dark magic" rebirthing potion (unicorn blood, Nagini’s snake venom, bone from his father, flesh from Wormtail, and blood from Harry) (GF32, GF33). Voldemort deliberately used Harry’s blood because he wanted Lily’s "lingering protection" magic in his blood too (GF33).
SEVERUS SNAPE
FAMILY
Birthdate: January 9 (JKR) 1960 (year based on James's dates-DH16).
Deathdate: May 1, 1998, during the Battle of Hogwarts, about an hour before the dawn (DH32).

Father: Tobias Snape (Muggle --HBP30).
Childhood: Appears to have had an abusive father (OP26, DH33).
Location of childhood home: A brick row house on Spinner's End by a river (DH33), in what appears to be a rundown area of an industrial city in northern England (HBP2).
Relationships: Severus loved childhood friend Lily Evans faithfully, but in a possessive, obsessive way, until he died. In 1999, Rowling was asked if Snape had ever fallen in love. Here's what she said: excerpt from "The Connection" interview, October 12, 1999 [mp3 audio].
SNAPE at HOGWARTS
Years: 1971 - 1978.
House: Slytherin (JKR website).

Potions classroom: Cold and dark, the walls were lined with glass jars with slimy bits of some animal or plant (OP26).
Dark Arts classroom: His Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom was dark and gloomy with pictures of people "in pain, sporting grisly injuries or strangely contorted body parts." (HBP9).
Headmaster's office: When Snape became Headmaster, he did not change the Headmaster's office much (at least Harry didn't notice anything) (DH33).
Portrait: Harry made sure that Snape's abdication did not deny him the honor of having his portrait hand with the rest of the Hogwarts Headmasters (OBT/CH).
SKILLS, AFFILIATIONS, ETC.
Wand: ?
Organizations & affiliations: Death Eater, Order of the Phoenix.
Skills: Potions (i.e.: Wolfsbane and Veritaserum), curses, Occlumens, Legilimens. Can fly without a broom (DH30).
Patronus: Doe (DH19).
Worst fear/memory: Possibly his worst memory is the humiliating episode when James Potter hung him upside down so his "graying" underwear showed, and Snape called Lily a "Mudblood." (OP28). However, Dumbledore thinks it was when Snape realized that Voldemort decided to go after the Potters because of the Prophecy (HBP25).
Punishment: Denounced as a Death Eater by Karkaroff at his trial; however Dumbledore vouched for his loyalty (GF30).
Battles: Snape was at the Battle of the Tower, where he killed Dumbledore and then hustled Draco to safety. In the Battle of the Seven Harrys (DH4) Snape fought with the rest of the Death Eaters and cursed George Weasley's ear off. He was present at the Battle of Hogwarts, but did not fight because Voldemort kept him nearby (DH32).
RUBEUS HAGRID
Gamekeeper and Keeper of the Keys at Hogwarts; in the fall of 1993 he also became the Care of Magical Creatures teacher.
FAMILY
Ancestry: Half-blood.
Mother: Fridwulfa, one of the last British giants; she abandoned the family when Hagrid was 3 years old (GF23).
Father: An unnamed wizard, died 1941-2 during Hagrid’s second year at Hogwarts (GF23).
Siblings: Grawp, a giant half-brother (OP30).
Childhood: Raised by his human (wizard) father and orphaned in his second year at Hogwarts; Dumbledore looked out for him after that.
Location of childhood home: "West Country," which usually refers to Devon, Somerset and Cornwall (R4). This area of England is where many of our folktales about giants come from: Jack the Giant Killer and Jack and the Beanstalk to name a few. Many Cornish rock formations and ancient stone-age stone rings have long been associated with giants.
Attracted to: Mme. Olympe Maxime of Beauxbatons (GF), but the relationship does not work out (OBT/CH).
Pets, etc.: Fang (boarhound), Aragog (Acromantula), Buckbeak, (Hippogriff), Norbert/Norberta (dragon), Fluffy (hellhound).

HAGRID at HOGWARTS
His first year: 1940
House: Gryffindor
Hogwarts staff: "Gamekeeper" and "Keeper of the Keys and the Grounds" at Hogwarts (PS4). Possibly replaced Ogg (GF33). As "Keeper of the Keys," it is Hagrid's job to meet the Hogwarts first-years and escort them from the Hogsmeade railway station across the lake to Hogwarts. Since 1993, Hagrid has also been the Care of Magical Creatures teacher.
Residence: cabin or hut on Hogwarts' grounds near the Forbidden Forest (image from PS/f on the right).
Equipment: Pink umbrella (disguises his broken wand), Flesh-Eating Slug Repellent (CS4).
Penalties: Expelled from Hogwarts during his third year (1943) after he was framed by Tom Riddle for opening the Chamber of Secrets and causing Moaning Myrtle’s death.
SKILLS, ETC.
Wand: Oak, sixteen inches, rather bendy (PS5); it was broken when he was expelled from Hogwarts (Hagrid has embedded it in his pink umbrella).
Organizations & affiliations: Order of the Phoenix.
Career: Keeper of the Keys and the Grounds at Hogwarts (PS4).
Skills: "not a fully qualified wizard" (PA5). Affection for magical animals, especially the dangerous ones. Hagrid was not allowed to do magic before his name was cleared, although it seems that his broken wand was somehow embedded in his pink umbrella and he did cast a spell or two. Now he is allowed to do magic, but as he was never properly trained, he'll always be somewhat inept at it (SN).
Worst fear/memory: His father’s death in 1941-2. (PA11)
Handwriting: "scribble" (CS2).
Punishment: Incarcerated in Azkaban for a few weeks during May 1993, after the Chamber of Secrets was re-opened; released after Harry was able to exonerate him.
SIRIUS BLACK
FAMILY
Birthdate: 1959 or 1960 (year based on James's dates-DH16).
Deathdate: June 1996; killed by his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange whose spell knocked him through an ancient, veiled archway in the Department of Mysteries (OP35). Sirius left all his possessions to Harry in his will (HBP3).
Ancestry: Pure-blood.
Family in general: "The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black" dating to at least the Middle Ages (OP6); descendent of Phineas Nigellus Black, a Hogwarts Headmaster. Parents convinced that to be a 'Black' made you "practically royal." Disowned by his mother (and blasted off the family tapestry) for his rejection of the family’s belief in pure-blood supremacy. Black family members tend to be named for constellations.
Childhood: At 16 Sirius "had enough" of his parents' "pure-blood mania" and ran away to live with James Potter’s parents. At 17, bought a house of his own with money from Uncle Alphard (OP6; note that UK ed. says he "got" a house.)
Location of childhood home: number twelve Grimmauld Place, London.
Mother: Walburga Black (1925-1985); her portrait is permanently mounted in the hallway of the Black family home.
Father: Orion Black (1929-1979) who heavily fortified the family home at 12 Grimmauld Place, London.
Siblings: Regulus Arcturus Black (1961-1979) [more...]
